Fuses for fuel gauge Empty Fuses for fuel gauge

Post  ColinH Thu Nov 11, 2010 1:40 pm

    Hi all

I have just got a 88 V12 and what a real nice car, its been stored since 1998 and has a couple of small problems.

First is my fuel gauge does not work, its on empty all the time, is there a fuse for the gauge? where is it located? as I do not have any books yet? Any other ideas why it may not work?

    thanks Colin

Hi Colin, dont forget to check the sender unit on the tank. Dont know about Jags but on my old Jensen Healey you took the power wire off the tank, turned on the ignition then touched the wire to earth. If the gauge then ran up to "full" the sender unit was at fault, if no movement the gauge was at fault.Perhaps a more experienced Jag/Electrical guy can pass on any other info. Let me know how you get on. Regards, Dave, Merseyside

David's procedure is absolutely correct for thermal type fuel gauges (also thermal type temperature gauges)and, as far as I know, these are fitted to Jaguars. However, if the gauge is a magnetic type, the exact opposite happens (when the sender is disconnected, the gauge reads full, and when the sender wire is grounded it reads empty). The fun doesn't stop there however, because modern vehicles with fully electronic systems may require testing the fuel gauge with a diagnostic machine via the diagnostic socket (i.e a 'functional test' or an 'actuator test'), but I don't think that applies to this age of vehicle.
